A New Era of Resilience and Community Spirit

Pembridge is proud to celebrate the official reopening of Wardell Public School, marking a significant milestone in the Northern Rivers’ journey of recovery and renewal. After the catastrophic floods of 2022, School Infrastructure NSW led a comprehensive rebuild, delivering a state-of-the-art, flood-resilient campus for the Wardell community.

Building Back Stronger: Flood-Resilient Design

The new Wardell Public School features four bright, modern classrooms, a new library, a canteen, a front office, and upgraded administration and staff areas. The campus also includes refreshed landscaping and the continued presence of Jumbunna Sugartown Preschool next to the school site.

Flood resilience was central to the design. Core facilities have been raised on a steel structure, safeguarding them from future flood events. Durable, flood-resistant materials were used throughout, and ground-level amenities are designed for easy cleaning and rapid restoration in the event of inundation. These measures ensure the school is equipped to serve future generations, no matter the challenges that may arise.

Official Opening and Community Celebration

The reopening ceremony, held on 23 September 2024, was attended by Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Early Learning, Greg Warren, who officially opened the new facilities and joined the school community in celebrating this new chapter234. Principal Kim Wheatland paid tribute to the resilience and adaptability of students, staff, and families, acknowledging their unwavering support throughout the rebuilding process245.

A Moment for the Future: Burying the Time Capsule

A highlight of the ceremony was the burying of a time capsule. A symbolic gesture connecting the school’s proud history with its bright future. Students, staff, and community members contributed items and messages, capturing the spirit of Wardell in 2024 for future generations to discover.
